Frameworks

STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is the gold standard. For "tell me about yourself," use the Past-Present-Future framework. For "why banking," connect personal experience to the specific role. Each framework provides structure without sounding rehearsed.

Use the Past-Present-Future structure: briefly cover your background, explain what you are doing now and why it is relevant, then articulate why investment banking is the logical next step. Keep it under 90 seconds and end with energy.

The most frequent questions are: tell me about yourself, why investment banking, why this bank, tell me about a time you worked in a team, describe a leadership experience, and tell me about a time you failed. Prepare polished answers for all six.

Choose a real failure where you learned something meaningful. Briefly describe what happened, take ownership without making excuses, explain what you learned, and describe how you applied that lesson subsequently. Never pick a trivial example.

Memorize the key beats and structure, not word-for-word scripts. Over-rehearsed answers sound robotic. Know your opening line, the critical details, and your closing result for each story, then deliver them conversationally with natural variation.

Research each bank culture and values. Emphasize teamwork and collaboration for relationship-driven firms, analytical rigor for technically-focused banks, and entrepreneurial drive for boutiques. Adjust your "why this bank" answer completely for each interview.
